"Memories" is a song by American band Maroon 5, released through 222 and Interscope Records on September xx, 2019, as the atomic number 82 single from the band's 7th studio album Jordi.[2] [3]
Lyrically, the vocal pays homage to the memories of a loved one who has since passed. The vocal received more often than not negative reviews from music critics and was listed equally one of the worst songs of 2019 by Spin magazine. "Memories" is based on "Catechism in D Major" by German composer Johann Pachelbel. The song was written by Maroon five's pb singer Adam Levine, Stefan Johnson, Hashemite kingdom of jordan Johnson, Michael Pollack, Jacob Kasher Hindlin, Jon Bellion, and Vincent Ford. Levine and the production team the Monsters and the Strangerz produced the song. The single peaked at number ii on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and at number one on the international music charts.
Information technology is Maroon 5's concluding unmarried with bassist Mickey Madden, who announced his divergence from the ring in 2020, following his arrest for domestic violence.[iv]

The ring'due south lead singer, Adam Levine, explained: "This song is for anyone who has ever experienced loss. In other words, this song is for all of us."[5] The song is based on the loss of the band'southward manager and Levine's friend, Jordan Feldstein who died in December 2017, from pulmonary embolism.[vi] According to guitarist, James Valentine: "It's a different kind of song for united states of america…Information technology'due south an important vocal for united states. You know, we experienced some loss in the final couple of years. We lost our longtime managing director, Jordan Feldstein. We heard the skeleton of this vocal and thought information technology matched where we were at."[2]
In an interview of The Howard Stern Testify, Levine said: "I needed this song", he continued: "In a world that'due south increasingly chaotic and crazy and angry in a lot of means... rather than fight near things, it'south prissy to take a mutual ground and all of united states of america accept had loss... Rolling Rock Republic of india listed it among the worst songs of 2019.[xiii] In The Guardian, Graeme Virtue was critical of the track's "trite" lyrics, and dismissed it as "fun-free dreck".[xiv] Pitchfork 's Dani Blum found the guitar line "cloying" and the take on tragedy "pallid".[15] Evening Standard reviewer David Smyth called the song'due south use of "Canon in D Major" a "ghastly poaching".[16] Jason Friedman of Paste derided it for beingness as "viscerally abrasive" equally the band'southward 2016 unmarried "Don't Wanna Know".[17] Spin listed "Memories" as one of the worst songs of 2019, describing it as "a replica of a replica of a replica, viscid with the rest of borrowed emotion just hollow of anything resembling its own".[18]

"Memories" debuted at number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100,[22] and after peaked at number two behind Mail Malone's "Circles" to become the band's 10th top-five rail and 15th meridian-ten track.[23] This made Maroon 5 only the second ring (the other is the Rolling Stones) to accept a top-two hit on the Hot 100 in iii different decades (2000s, 2010s and 2020s).[24] The song additionally peaked at number one on the Developed Top xl chart, giving the band its fourteenth number one there,[25] and at number one on the Developed Gimmicky chart, where it remained for twenty weeks.[26] [27] At the stop of 2020, "Memories" ranked at number eight on the Hot 100 year-cease chart.[28]

An animated lyric video of the song was released on November 29, 2019, by the band's YouTube channel.[32] Directed by Andrew Southward. Cohen and Ryan Kieffer and was created by the animated production studio Confidential Cartoon Studios. The lyric video starts in a attic with the Maroon 5 retentivity box to include a number of items referencing the ring's music videos for other songs: mural ("Three Trivial Birds"), Matrimony Flag and the microphone ("Moves Like Jagger" featuring Christina Aguilera), bow tie and toast glasses ("Sugar"), scorpion ("Expect"), black leather jacket ("Misery"), cherry flower trees ("This Honey"), blue turtle costume ("Don't Wanna Know" featuring Kendrick Lamar), the payphone ("Payphone" featuring Wiz Khalifa and "Wake Up Telephone call"), white boxing gloves ("1 More Dark") and a reddish lollipop and butterfly ("What Lovers Do" featuring SZA), along with a collection of boxes.[33] [34] Scenes with the map of Los Angeles from the band's concerts and their tour bus. Other items in the video including an album cover fine art of the band'southward The Studio Albums (2016),[35] The Vocalization drinking cup, Magic 8-Ball, electric guitar, two MTV awards features the Moon Man in Video Music Laurels and the trophy in Europe Music Award, a Grammy Award and iHeartRadio Music Award trophy, tickets and the letter M with a vertex logo from the band'due south coloured stickers, a leon lighted of "V" from the band's fifth anthology and a collage of photos from when the ring was known every bit Kara's Flowers, all together only inside a collection of items appeared from the box.[34]

On October 6, 2019, Maroon five performed "Memories" for the offset time on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which aired on October seven.[40] The following day, band members Levine and Valentine performed an audio-visual version of the song on The Howard Stern Show.[41] In December 2019, the ring played the song on Red Pill Blues Tour, during the final shows in Doha and Las Vegas. On February 1, 2020, Maroon v performed the song at the Bud Light Super Bowl Music Fest, a pre-show for Super Basin LIV in Miami and made a tribute to Kobe Bryant, with his daughter Gianna and seven other victims of the Calabasas helicopter crash.[42] [43] During the COVID-19 pandemic, the band performed a remote version of the vocal in at dwelling edition of The Tonight Bear witness Starring Jimmy Fallon on May 12, 2020, with Levine dedicated to Bryant.[44] [45]
On June 11, 2021, the band played the song on Today, to promote the release of Jordi.[46] In September 2021, Maroon 5 performed "Memories" in New York Metropolis for the CNN television special Shine a Light: A Tribute to the Families of 9/xi, to commemorate for the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks in 2001.[47]
